Jornalero is spanglish for day laborer. A day laborer waits in the street and is hired on an hour basis. They perform a variety of jobs that include, plumbing, painting, construction, etc. Employment, as life in America is uncertain for a jornalero. With no papers they lack any type of individual right in this country; a country that attracted them with the promise of a better life. All of them have a fascinating story of their odyssey, leaving loved ones behind and stumbling upon dangers to make it across the border.

Here, they wait.

This project will employ jornaleros in the creation of contemporary craft. It will require from them a display of creativity and patience. They will be employed under the norm that currently exists. The intervened objects will testify their existence, their illegality and their current status quo.
Why? Because I am also a jornalero.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

MDF Chair

Conceptualized after playing with a 3d puzzle and thinking of producing it with a CNC router we designed the pieces of the chair in a modular material saving way, this process resulted in the chairs final form.

A transportable chair conceived to use less material.

The chair is collapsible, it includes screws and screwdriver and you can assemble it in less than five minutes. When collapsed it fits in a box that is allowed on an airplane.

Shadow Rug

We traced the contour of a tree shadow from the archeological site of Monte Alban. The basic concept is to create, inside your room, the sensation of being out through the perception of a tree shadow. Hand weaved in Teotitlan del Valle by artisan Sergio Lazo using organic wool.

Hexagon Rug

This piece was developed thinking of modular growth. The module is an hexagon that is hand-woven. The artisan, Sergio Lazo, developed a special knot technique to enable the shape. We decided on the palette of colors. The green color was inspired by fluorescent posters found in the Oaxacan markets.

Modular growth

The rugs are sold separately.
